The Parable of the Three Software Developers

Once upon a time there was a software project that would be very important to a company's operations. After learning that more than half of software projects fail, the CEO wanted to try something new. So, the CEO hired three different software developers for the project. The CEO offered a big bonus to the developer who succeeded.

The first developer was into the latest flashy technologies and pushed the client into "cutting edge" languages, frameworks, and environments. Being a tech expert made the developer feel important, but the company soon had trouble with software compatibility, finding people who understood things, and unresolved bugs.

The second developer was in love with software methodologies. They made the client feel secure by using impressive buzzwords. The developer felt safe too, believing that methodologies would make the project successful. As they dutifully followed their preferred approach, the project was veering off track unnoticed.

The third developer took a neutral approach. They were not into any technology or methodology for its own sake. They weren't scared of uncertainty and calmly waited to understand the problem before deciding what to do. They stayed neutral until the road was clear - asking, listening, watching. As the project went on, they used their experience and intuition to fix problems quickly. They would sometimes take a step back from a technology or to evaluate a team member's suitability.

As you may have guessed, the third developer succeeded, and the company thrived for many years using the new software.
